Overview

The Tsum Valley Trek takes you on a journey into a remote and secluded valley in the Gorkha district of Nepal, offering a truly unique and authentic cultural experience. This off-the-beaten-path trek immerses you in the ancient Tibetan Buddhist way of life that has been preserved for centuries in the isolated villages of Tsum Valley. The trek begins in the town of Arughat and follows the Budhi Gandaki River, gradually ascending through lush forests and traditional villages. As you enter the restricted Tsum Valley region, you’ll be greeted by a landscape that seems frozen in time, untouched by modern influences. One of the highlights of the trek is the opportunity to visit ancient monasteries and gompas (Buddhist shrines), where you can witness the rich spiritual practices and traditions of the local people. The villages, such as Chhokang Paro and Chhule, are home to warm and welcoming communities, offering a glimpse into their daily lives and customs. The natural beauty of Tsum Valley is equally captivating. The trek takes you through diverse landscapes, from terraced fields and rhododendron forests to high mountain passes like Ngakyu La and Mu Gompa, offering stunning views of the surrounding peaks, including the majestic Ganesh Himal and Sringi Himal. The Tsum Valley Trek is a moderate to challenging trek, with some high-altitude sections reaching up to 3,700 meters (12,139 feet). It’s a journey that rewards trekkers with a unique cultural experience, breathtaking mountain vistas, and the opportunity to explore a region that has remained largely untouched by modern tourism. Due to the remoteness and restricted nature of the trek, a special trekking permit is required, ensuring that the region’s pristine natural and cultural heritage is preserved. The best seasons to undertake this trek are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November), when the weather conditions are favorable, and the trails are relatively dry.
