Overview

Located 7 km northeast of Kathmandu, Boudhanath Stupa is one of Nepal’s most iconic and sacred Buddhist sites, renowned for its majestic whitewashed dome and gilded tower adorned with the all-seeing eyes of the Buddha. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this stupa, built after AD 600 by Tibetan king Songtsen Gampo, is a masterpiece of architectural harmony. According to legend, it was constructed as an act of penance for the king’s unwitting patricide. Rebuilt after Mughal invasions in the 14th century, Boudhanath remains a vibrant center of devotion, where Tibetan pilgrims perform morning and evening koras (circumambulations) around its base.

The stupa’s design symbolizes the Buddha’s path to enlightenment, with its plinth (earth), dome (water), harmika (fire), spire (air), and umbrella (ether) representing the five elements. Its 13 spire levels signify the stages to nirvana. Boudhanath is believed to house relics, possibly of the past Buddha Kashyapa or Siddhartha Gautama. Surrounding the base are 108 images of Dhyani Buddha Amitabha and 147 niches with prayer wheels, inviting visitors to engage in spiritual rituals.
